
Atlanta (CNN)After the northwest Pacific experienced the longest streak on record without a named storm, the first one of the season means business. Nepartak developed on Sunday in the open waters of the Pacific, south of Guam. This ended a 200-day stretch without a named storm, dating back to December 17, 2015. In the 48 hours since it developed, the storm has rapidly strengthened into a super typhoon. In 24 hours Nepartak went from a tropical storm with winds of 110 kph (70 mph) to a super typhoon with winds of 240 kph (150 mph).
